This home was built in 1850 after a tragedy struck a North Carolina plantation. At a rural property called Roseland, nearly 20 people fell ill and died from a scourge they called "Black Tongue." Both enslaved people and members of the white family perished after they discovered that their well had become contaminated by manure.
