Born in Scarsdale, New York, to a family of Holocaust survivors, Heyman debuted in the professional wrestling business in 1986, becoming known as the CEO and creative force behind the Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) promotion from 1993 until its closure in 2001.

Due to a number of different issues with the promotion, such as financial troubles, the Philadelphia based promotion had to close its doors. It was acquired by WWE, where Heyman eventually became employed and works to this day. Even though WWE eventually rebooted ECW, it was only ECW in name alone.

Further controversy arose when it came to light that Kulas had lied to ECW owner and booker Paul Heyman about his age and professional wrestling training. The incident led to the temporary cancellation of the inaugural ECW pay-per-view Barely Legal, and legal action against New Jack.
