Nov 7, 2023 · Today, ESA’s Euclid space mission reveals its first full-colour images of the cosmos. Never before has a telescope been able to create such razor-sharp astronomical images across such a large patch of the sky, and looking so far into the distant Universe.

Euclid will take images in optical and near-infrared light; these images will eventually cover more than one-third of the extragalactic sky outside the Milky Way, and depict billions of cosmic targets out to a distance where light has taken up to 10 billion years to reach us.

Sep 19, 2019 · The Euclid telescope is a three mirror Korsch configuration with a 0.45 deg off-axis field and an aperture stop at the primary mirror. The entrance pupil diameter is 1.2 metres, the optically corrected and unvigneted field of view is 0.79 × 1.16 deg², and the focal length is 24.5 m.

The telescope and its optics are designed to deliver a large field of view and a stable image quality throughout the survey. Why must Euclid observe so many (billions of) galaxies? This is necessary to build a detailed map of the distribution of matter in the Universe.
