The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) is a consortium of the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute, and the State of Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys.

AVO is working to understand the eruptive history of Alaska Volcanoes by studying the timing, distribution and amount of ash deposits since the last major ice sheets in Alaska retreated some 10,000-15,000 years ago. Oct 16, 2024 · Analysis of seismic data indicates a subtle increase in the rate and size of earthquakes over the past few weeks. Because this is a notable departure from the normal background seismicity of the volcano, AVO is raising the Aviation Color Code to YELLOW and the Volcano Alert Level to ADVISORY.
