The Court considers appeals from almost any case that originates in a circuit court or an orphans’ court in Maryland. Parties who are unsuccessful in the Appellate Court may be able to seek further review in the Supreme Court , Maryland’s highest court.

Maryland Appellate Court Opinions Effective December 14, 2022, the former Court of Appeals of Maryland is renamed the Supreme Court of Maryland and the Court of Special Appeals is renamed the Appellate Court of Maryland.

The Appellate Court of Maryland hears appeals from the circuit courts and orphan’s courts. It does not hear appeals that come from any other courts. Sometimes a circuit court case must instead be appealed to the Supreme Court of Maryland.

The Appellate Court of Maryland is the intermediate appellate court for the U.S. state of Maryland. Formerly known as the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, it was created in 1966 in response to the rapidly growing caseload in the Supreme Court of Maryland.

The Supreme Court of Maryland (previously the Maryland Court of Appeals) is the highest court of the U.S. state of Maryland. The court, which is composed of one chief justice and six associate justices, meets in the Robert C. Murphy Courts of Appeal Building in the state capital, Annapolis .

Pursuant to modified Rule 8-521(a)(2), effective August 1, 2020, cases in the Appellate Court of Maryland will be “assigned to successive sessions of the Court after the record is complete and the appellee’s brief has been filed” or the time for filing the appellee’s brief has expired.

Like the State's highest court, the Appellate Court of Maryland is an appellate court. It was established as the Court of Special Appeals in 1966 to ease the caseload of the Court of Appeals and to facilitate resolution of cases requiring appellate adjudication.
