Lee County was formed on December 11, 1826 by an act of the General Assembly of Georgia in Milledgeville. There are currently different opinions about who the county was named to honor.

The Board of County Commissioners is composed of five members elected by the voters through district elections for four year staggered terms.

The Sheriff's Office provides security for all courts, processes court orders, patrols county neighborhoods, and maintains the Neighborhood Watch Program. The Sheriff also operates the county's Criminal Justice Center (CJC).
