Flaming Gorge Reservoir is the largest reservoir in Wyoming, on the Green River, impounded behind the Flaming Gorge Dam. Construction on the dam began in 1958 and was completed in 1964. The reservoir stores 3,788,900 acre-feet (4.6735 × 10 9 m 3) of water when measured at an elevation of 6,040 feet (1,841 m) above sea-level (maximum).

Flaming Gorge Dam rises 502 feet above the bedrock of the Green River, 32 miles south of the Utah-Wyoming border, and forms the Flaming Gorge Reservoir that extends 91 miles north into Wyoming.

The reservoir is managed by the Forest Service as part of the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. The reservoir is 91 miles long with 350 miles of shoreline. The Utah section of the reservoir winds through colorful, narrow canyons; the Wyoming portion is wider and surrounded by high sagebrush deserts and rock mesas.
