Sydney Cove (Eora: Warrane [1]) is a bay on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour, one of several harbours in Port Jackson, on the coast of Sydney, New South Wales. Sydney Cove is a focal point for community celebrations, due to its central Sydney location between the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge .

The arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in January of 1788 marked the beginning of the European colonisation of Australia. The fleet was made up of 11 ships carrying convicts from Britain to Australia.

Sydney Cove was the Bengal country ship Begum Shaw that new owners purchased in 1796 to carry goods to Sydney Cove, and renamed for her destination. She was wrecked in 1797 on Preservation Island off Tasmania while on her way from Calcutta to Port Jackson .

Jan 23, 2025 · Work on the site he chose for a convict settlement at nearby Sydney Cove, in Port Jackson, began shortly after, on 26 January. Having been appointed the first NSW governor on 12 October 1786, Phillip was aware before arriving of the potential problems of establishing a colony on the other side of the world.

May 30, 2017 · In March 1797 at Ninety Mile Beach in Victoria, five British and 12 Bengali seamen swam ashore after their longboat was ripped apart in a storm. Sydney, a town of barely 1,500 people, was over 700 kilometres to the north.

Jan 25, 2021 · When Did the First Fleet Arrive in Australia? On 26 January 1788 a settlement was founded in Sydney Cove. It subsequently became the capital of the British colony of New South Wales.

Location: Circular Quay, Sydney. The Aboriginal name for Sydney Cove as recorded in a number of First Fleet journals, maps and vocabularies, was Warrane, also spelt as War-ran, Warrang and Wee-rong.

The wreck of the East India merchant vessel Sydney Cove in 1797, was to lead to the first large-scale mercantile operation in Sydney, established at Campbell’s Cove by Robert Campbell. His sandstone warehouses still grace the shore of The Rocks today.
