Across all Florida airports firearm discoveries have dropped from 855 total discoveries in 2022, 834 in 2023 and 817 in 2024.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported an increase in the amount of guns detected at security checkpoints in/Washington area airports in 2024, officials said.

Nationally, TSA officers found 6,678 guns on travelers last year. TSA screened around 904 million passengers and crew at airports around the country in 2024. In Kentucky, TSA screened around 8.7 million travelers last year. That was nearly a 6.9% increase from the prior year.

This past weekend, TSA agents confiscated a loaded gun from an airline contractor at one of the checkpoints at Pittsburgh International Airport. The contractor was found to have a loaded, 9mm handgun with a bullet in the chamber.

The Transportation Security Administration screened over 15 million departing travelers in Tennessee airports in 2024.

According to TSA, officers found a total of 319 firearms at Tennessee airports, an increase of six from the 2023 statewide total.

Gun detections at Miami International Airport hit a new high last year, according to the Transportation Security Administration. The big picture: TSA saw an overall decrease in guns found in passengers' carry-on bags across Florida airports: 817 in 2024 compared to 834 in 2023.

The TSA levied nearly $23 million in civil penalties against travelers caught with guns at security checkpoints—a new record and a 10% jump from the previous year.
