“BACK TO PLASTIC!” Trump appeared to be referring to former President Joe Biden’s July 2024 promise to “phase out” single-use plastics — including straws, cutlery and cups — in federal departments. The ban would have also covered all packaging and food service operations, with the end of procurement due in 2027.

Moving away from single-use plastics, including straws, had been the policy of President Joe Biden’s administration. It cited harmful environmental impacts when they end up in landfills and oceans. Plus the fossil fuels used in the production of plastics send heat-trapping greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.
