El Salvador has offered to take in people deported from the U.S. for entering the country illegally as well as the country’s violent criminals — even if they’re American citizens.

President Nayib Bukele has offered to jail deported criminals from the United States. His prisons have earned him a reputation as being tough on crime, but have raised alarms over rights abuses.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said late Monday that El Salvador’s president has offered to accept deportees from the US of any nationality, including violent American criminals now imprisoned in the United States.
