As the coldest temperatures so far this winter settled into the region this week, the Tennessee Valley Authority’s reliable and resilient power generation system met the highest peak demand in the agency’s over 91-year history.

The Tennessee Valley Authority said power demand reached 35,319 megawatts while the system temperature dropped to around 11 degrees.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) officials said Tuesday that energy demand was expected to peak Wednesday morning across the Tennessee Valley and exceed Tennessee Valley Authority’s all-time high of over 34,000 megawatts in January 2024. The TVA system is "well positioned to meet peak demand," they added.

The Tennessee Valley Authority met record-breaking electricity demand during the coldest temperatures of the season.

TVA delivered to its residential and commercial customers a peak of 35,319 megawatts, equal to the power demand of more than 20 million homes, beating a record it set almost exactly one year ago. The federal utility made the announcement in a post on X shortly before noon.
