As one round of a long-drawn-out battle for justice ends, many questions about the rape-murder case, the systemic rot it exposed and the promises made lie unanswered

The court found the former Kolkata Police civic volunteer guilty last Saturday. Judge Monday informed Roy he can appeal before HC against the sentencing. Roy maintains he is innocent.

The court also ordered Roy to pay Rs 50,000 as fine and directed West Bengal government to pay Rs 1,700,000 as compensation -- Rs 1,000,000 for death and Rs 700, 000 for rape on duty -- to the victim's family.

While hearing the case, Anirban Das, Additional District and Sessions Judge in Sealdah court, said the crime did not fall under the 'rarest of the rare' category, which justified not imposing the death penalty on the convict.

Kolkata rape and murder case 1990: Almost two decades ago, Dhananjoy Chatterjee hit the headlines after a court convicted him for the rape and murder of a 14-year-old schoolgirl on March 5, 1990. After 14 years of the heinous crime, Chatterjee was executed in Kolkata on August 14, 2004.
