Israeli police raided two Palestinian bookstores in occupied east Jerusalem on Sunday, confiscating books and arresting one of the owners and his nephew, according to their family members.

Mahmoud and Ahmed Muna, owners of East Jerusalem bookstore, Educational Bookshop, were detained by Israeli police on suspicion of violating public order. The World’s Host Marco Werman speaks with Pulitzer Prize winning author Nathan Thrall who had celebrated the launch of his latest book,

“The raid on Jerusalem’s THE EDUCATIONAL BOOKSHOP and the arrest of Mahmoud Muna and Ahmad Muna is a dangerous error of judgment by the Israel Police which should be reversed immediately,” Matti Friedman, the Jerusalem-based author and journalist, wrote on Facebook Monday.

The Israeli authorities are accusing the owners of Educational Bookshop of selling books promoting terrorism. In just a few decades, the store has become an institution of Palestinian intellectual life in Jerusalem.

In raiding the Educational Bookshop, police targeted a high-profiled location known to visitors from across the globe. It is a common stop on the itineraries of American Jewish groups visiting east Jerusalem, and sells coffee along with its stacks of literature.

The police said the stores were selling books that supported terrorism and that two members of the family who owned the business had been arrested. A lawyer said their detention was “political” rather than legal.
