The European Union is set agree to extend sanctions on Russia over its war against Ukraine on Monday with Hungary ready to lift its opposition to the move, according to people familiar with the matter.
The European Commission will continue talks with Ukraine on natural gas supplies to Europe and will include Hungary and Slovakia in these talks, according to a statement shared by an EU diplomat and seen by Reuters on Monday.

ROME. Jan 27 (Interfax) - Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto urged the European Union and Ukraine on Saturday to guarantee uninterrupted oil and gas supply to Hungary. "Ukraine and/or the European Union must guarantee that they will not impede transmission of natural gas and oil to Hungary in the future," Szijjarto said on social media.
Hungary wants the European Union to persuade Ukraine to resume gas transit from Russia to Europe, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday, signalling a tough debate as the EU seeks to extend its sanctions against Russia over the coming week.
Comments came after angry complaints from Slovakia and Hungary over Kyiv’s refusal to renew transit of Russian gas.
