Texas Democrats could centralize their argument against vouchers after Gov. Greg Abbott seemingly "admitted" that his priority issue defunds public schools.

Gina Hinojosa, a former president of the Austin school board, posted an interactive on X through which users can find out whether local school districts would lose money if the legislation Gov. Greg Abbott calls "school choice" is enacted this year.

In his push for private school vouchers, Gov. Greg Abbott has repeatedly emphasized he has no intention of harming public schools. But the Texas Republican this week acknowledged that his priority policy would in fact result in public schools losing money.

House Speaker Dustin Burrows reappointed state Rep. Brad Buckley (R-Killeen) to lead the committee. Buckley tried to get school voucher legislation approved in 2023 but rural Republicans and Democrats blocked the effort.
