If you don't stop and read all the exhibits and just walk through, you can go through in less than an hour. If you read the exhibits, look at the artifacts and participate in some of the displays, it can take 2 hours or more. Patee Park is a quiet park across the street from Pony Express to just relax or eat a packed lunch. Jesse James home was relocated a few blocks from its original location. It, and the Patee House Museum, (which used to be a popular hotel in its day), is just 2 blocks east of the Pony Express. Nearly a full day of history in walking distance.
